Student Series
Since 1985, the Roxy Regional Theatre has been enriching, enlivening and enlightening students through matinee performances of productions designed to complement the curricula of K-12 schools.
For school groups of 20 or more, student tickets for our daytime performances are $10. Teachers, staff and bus drivers are admitted at no charge. Parent chaperone tickets are $10. Our auditorium can accommodate up to 150 total per performance.
HEALTH AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS: While not required in the 40th Anniversary Season, we welcome and encourage masks for all patrons and visitors. The Roxy Regional Theatre reserves the right to change this COVID-19 policy at any time and will communicate any necessary changes electronically or in person.

“Be careful what you wish for” seems to be the ongoing theme in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Brothers Grimm inspired musical, INTO THE WOODS. The story follows The Baker and his wife who wish to have a child, Cinderella who wishes to go to the King’s Festival, and Jack who wishes his cow would give some milk. When The Baker and his wife are visited by the neighborhood witch, who reveals to them that she placed a curse on their family, the two set off on a journey into the woods to reverse the curse, along the way meeting a host of characters including Little Red, the Wolf, Rapunzel, and two princes. By the end of the first act, everyone has gotten their wish and will seemingly live happily ever after… but in Act II, when Jack’s beanstalk brings them a visit from an angry Giant, we see how the consequences of their actions haunt them in disastrous ways.
During a third grade lesson on the Civil Rights movement and Rosa Parks, a Latina child raises her hand to ask, “Where did we sit on the bus?” Her teacher can’t answer the question. This autobiographical solo show follows that kid from her childhood to adulthood, as she explores her family’s history, her identity as a first-generation American, and what the world will be like for her future children. Featuring live music that brings together Latin beats, hip-hop and looping, WHERE DID WE SIT ON THE BUS? is a high-energy, tour-de-force theatrical experience that examines what it means to be Latinx in America. 
In a new comedy from the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of Ruined, Lynn Nottage draws upon the screwball films of the 1930s to take a funny and irreverent look at racial stereotypes in Hollywood. BY THE WAY, MEET VERA STARK is a seventy-year journey through the life of Vera Stark, a headstrong African-American maid and budding actress, and her tangled relationship with her boss, a white Hollywood star desperately grasping to hold on to her career. When circumstances collide and both women land roles in the same Southern epic, the story behind the cameras leaves Vera with a surprising and controversial legacy scholars will debate for years to come.

Tomás, the son of migrant farm workers, meets a librarian who introduces him to the wonderful world of books. The stories enrich the lives of Tomás’ family and instill a love of reading. TOMÁS AND THE LIBRARY LADY is the inspiring true story of Tomás Rivera, who grew up in a migrant worker family, befriended a librarian in Iowa, and learned to love books and the places they took him. Tomás went on to a successful career in academia and became the chancellor of the University of California, Riverside. Adapted from José Cruz González’s beloved children’s book, this play can be readily understood by both English and Spanish speakers.
Inspired by Motown and R&B legends of the 1960s and ’70s, DREAMGIRLS follows the rising stardom of the Dreamettes, an all-girl singing trio from Chicago. The three best friends — the phenomenally talented, but demanding Effie White, the beautiful and appealing Deena Jones, and the eager, romantic Lorrell Robinson — team up with driven, demanding manager Curtis Taylor, who is determined to see their — and his — star rise. As their careers begin to take off, changes are made to ensure their mass appeal to the pop market. Egos are bruised, tempers flare, and hearts are broken in pursuit of stardom. Inspired by the stories of groups such as The Supremes and The Shirelles and featuring many iconic classic songs, this hit musical is a love letter to American R&B music and the artists that make such music great.
It’s April 1st, 1919, and the young independent publisher John Pace Seavering is setting up his office: a couple of dilapidated rooms in a romantic Manhattan tower. With only enough capital to put out one book, John finds himself besieged by two authors. Denny McCleary, John’s brash and gifted college friend, has produced a manuscript so unruly it lives in a trio of crates. Denny has a surprise imperative: He’s fallen in love with the enchanting heiress Rosamund Plinth, and if John doesn’t agree to publish his book today, he’ll lose her forever. But John is also being strenuously lobbied by Jessie Brewster, the popular black jazz singer who is also John’s very secret mistress. She’s written her memoirs and is determined to have her story known. As John temporizes with these two, another drama is playing out in the anteroom: A machine of mysterious provenance and purpose has arrived and is spewing out stacks of pages while John’s hapless assistant, Gidger, strives vainly to stem the flood. Through their struggles, the youth discover a new world of feeling and freedom outside their classrooms with beautiful and devastating consequences.

An intimate look at the Father of the Modern Musical, featuring new arrangements of his most beloved work, this “revelatory revue full of wonderful moments” presents a portrait of the famed songwriter in his own words … and music. Ranging from the beloved to the obscure, the carefully selected two-dozen songs hang from a framework of in-depth video interviews, delving into Sondheim’s personal life and artistic process.
