SPEAKEASY Plays, GALA Prepares, OLIVER! and GO, DOG. GO! Wait

“Important notice! John McDonald or Current Resident.”

In a way, that is the tone of our yearly brochure. But people often move and the new occupant is not always an avid theatregoer, more’s the pity. Bulk mailing is cheaper, of course, but harder to keep track of and to manage. Each brochure costs a dollar to go and, if it comes back as “returned to sender,” another dollar to go out again … so it becomes a lose-lose proposition, especially when you take into account the cost of the design. I don’t want to be thought of as a cheapskate — but I am Scot-Irish, and the Scottish part rears its head at waste.

So for all those who would like to receive a brochure with our 2015-2016 season schedule, just phone the box office at (931) 645-7699 or email us at roxytheatre@bellsouth.net, and we will happily send you a hard copy by post. For those who say there is nothing to do in Clarksville, just post the brochure on your fridge and you will see there is much, and a great deal of it is family-friendly.

Much like our brochure mailings, we have culled our list of next Saturday’s Gala 33 invitation recipients from those who have attended or responded in the past. But, as with the brochure, we always strive to be inclusive rather than exclusive. All are welcome, so please make any last-minute reservations no later than this coming Monday.

Our Saturday School of the Arts begins tomorrow with the added perk of having Alicia Jayne Kelly starting the fall session with dance. Acting classes, for ages 10 to 18, meet every Saturday during the school year from 9:00am to 11:00am for $60/month. Dance and voice classes in addition to the acting, from 9:00am to 12:30am, are available for $100/month.

Some of our most devoted students gave extra time to workshop The Magnificent Ambersons and have volunteered to bring their talents and expertise to workshop Beverly Fisher’s book and play Grace Among the Leavings to a size fitting a staged reading upstairs in theotherspace next spring.

Go, Dog. Go! is in rehearsal alongside Oliver! The workhouse children in Lionel Bart’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic — Magnus DoVanne as Oliver Twist, Nate Miller as The Artful Dodger, Anna Ryan as Bet, Andrew Patton as the Bookseller Boy, Breanna Cox, Landen Daniel, Aramae DoVanne, Ava DoVanne, Arianna Grey, Truman Jepson, Jacob Johnson, Sidney McCarty, James McNiel, Lauren Mund, Kylan Ritchie, Tanner Sigears, Caden Slaughter and Georgia Smith — have been in rehearsal since mid-August. Oliver! opens September 25 and runs through October 10. Go, Dog. Go!, in addition to weekday matinees for school groups, plays three public performances on September 26, October 3 and October 10, at 11:00am.

Kelley Barker, Ryan Bowie, Michael Jemison and Rori Nogee sing, joke and dance the Charleston through the Roaring Twenties for the final two times in our lobby musical revue Speakeasy, playing tonight (Friday) and tomorrow at 8:00pm. Tickets are $20, including a beverage and light refreshments.

See you at the theatre!

[John McDonald]
