Roxy Regional School of the Arts Open SHREK The Musical JR. Tonight at 6pm

by RoxyRegionalTheatre on May 20, 2016

In 1983 we lived in the Roxy, working like field hands to pull up carpet, clean up pigeon waste, remove tattered chairs and battered curtains, and put doors on the men’s room stalls (which had not had any since the building opened in ’47). Five o’clock visitations from well-wishers made for long days and longer nights.

What money we had, we used to stay alive. We had no car, so I biked everywhere. No showers in the building wore Tom’s mother to a frazzle, cleaning up after two coalminers (us) who washed up every night in her immaculate bathroom.

One day, while sending up a silent prayer to Saint Joseph, I found sticking out of the wall a long pipe with a spigot. I turned the tap, and water came out. We now had a shower — primitive, but a place to wash up.

With loads of old movie placards, along with some treasures/debris from the Roxy, we set up a flea market. We sold cokes and popcorn courtesy of J. Ted Norris.

Our first Christmas, I got up, went to Mass, came back and went to bed. A few hours later I got up, ate lunch and went back to bed. I guess I was recovering from carrying a load from July through December.

Christmas Eve, I came into the theatre. The street was empty and cold. I thought, “Why am I here? There’s no show tonight or tomorrow.” So I turned off the heat and went home.

Shrek The Musical JR. opens tonight (Friday) at 6:00pm. The set and the costumes are fabulous, shared with Debby Dowlen, who is producing Shrek next fall at her school. From Barnum onward, Debby has made the dressing of actors possible for free.

Allison Ferebee, 2015 Jr. Monte Award recipient and Princess Fiona in Shrek, has made us all very proud by the great work she has done for us and for APSU during her first year, taking leads (some at the last moment) and doing a bang-up job in all of them. Allison moves on to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh this fall.

Sidney McCarty (Wicked Witch in Shrek) is leaving us for the University of Evansville, while our intern Truman Jepson (Lord Farquaad) goes off to the University of Memphis on scholarship in the musical theatre program. The bulk of our graduating seniors will continue in the arts here at APSU.

Shrek continues May 21, 24, 25, 28, 31, June 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 at 6:00pm; May 21, 28, June 4 and 11 at 2:00pm; and May 26 at 7:00pm. All tickets are $15.

“Lunch with Shrek” — featuring hot dogs, mac ∓ cheese, fresh fruit, beverage and Shrek’s “Dirt Cups” for dessert at Edward’s; photos with Shrek and Fiona; fairytale crafts and the 2:00pm performance — is at 12:30pm next Saturday, May 28, as well as June 11. Tickets are $40, and all children must be accompanied by a paying adult.

See you at the theatre!
