PETER PAN Enters Final Two Weeks, LITTLE MERMAID Waiting In The Wings

by RoxyRegionalTheatre on May 10, 2013

“Why can’t we stay as little children? Why must we put away our toys? Our parents don’t have the adventures that we do as girls and boys.” [Peter Pan]

Some years ago, I made an appointment with then APSU president Dr. Sherry Hoppe to express my concerns over the theatre department’s one-act plays, guest speaker Charles Strouse, and the opera Candide all being presented in the same weekend.

I told her that I would have loved to have gotten a letter from my son saying he was performing in the one-acts, going to hear Charles Strouse speak, and attending my favorite opera, Candide — but I explained to Dr. Hoppe how that was impossible, due to scheduling. She seemed concerned and led me to believe it would not happen again. I left her office elated.

The next year, it was the same. I did not bother to make another appointment.

This year it happened again, with all of those free Rivers & Spires concerts thrown into the mix. All of those opera performers needed to see such an important, yet rarely produced Greek comedy as Lysistrata, and all of those actors needed to see how their university presents opera. Again, both opportunities were missed.

I must learn to mind my own business — easier said than done. My dream is for us all to plan, prepare and schedule our events in a more timely manner, so the arts not only may survive, but flourish. No one can attend everything, but everything should be available to be attended.

We are now in rehearsal for Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr. — which opens next Friday, May 17, at 6pm — and entering the final stretch of Peter Pan, with 7pm Wednesday and Thursday and 8pm Friday and Saturday performances, before it closes next Saturday, May 18.

During Civil War Stories, a bit of Peter Pan’s decoupage set began to appear — but only to the trained eye. It was always partially hidden by greenery.

For The Little Mermaid Jr., the Darling nursery will have more than its share of ocean waves getting it ready for School of the Arts performers Summer Aoki, Ali Arnold, Sydney Barksdale, Gavin Berlyak, Jesse Boyle, Addisyn Bryant, Kourtni Cottrell, Lauren Creighton, Olivia Creighton, Grace Davis, Cheyenne Deibert, Ariana Desrosier, Ian Erbe, Alison Ferebee, Whitney Flickinger, Darcy Gautam, Autumn Gordon, Samantha Grimes, Ehma Herrera, Vivian Hurn, Truman Jepson, Jacob Johnson, Ana-Leigh Kirwin, Ashley Knowles, Patrick Long, Annalise Martin, Katherine McCarty, Sidney McCarty, Lauren Mund, Madeline O’Connor, Nicole Powell, Christian Rieke, Tristan Sartor, Georgia Smith, Garrett Taylor, Mitchell Wolfe, Taylor Wyatt and Amy Wyer.

We have lots of plans on board for “Ariel’s Sea Party” at Edward’s on Saturday, May 18 and 25, at noon. For a $25 ticket, you can enjoy chicken nuggets, mac and cheese, pb&j sandwiches, a beverage and dessert, and meet Ariel, Sebastian, Flounder and the gang for some fairytale fun, including crown and scepter decorating, before the 2pm performance of The Little Mermaid Jr.

See you at the theatre!
