Green Day’s AMERICAN IDIOT Wraps Up, SHREK and “Happenin’ at the Hollemans” Wait in the Wings

by RoxyRegionalTheatre on May 13, 2016

CDE Lightband (Bradley Jackson, Jeremy Dixon, George Benjamin, Brent Berry and others) and APSU Department of Art + Design (Scott Raymond, Patrick Gosnell, Rachel Bush, Chloe Clark, Courtney Hill, Seth Branch, Sophia Eisenbart, Precious Miller, Stephanie Klapperich, Mylisha Edwards) have given us such a brilliant set for Green Day’s American Idiot, multimedia notwithstanding.

I cannot remember a more creative and innovative piece of art for actors to perform in front of.  I don’t say “set,” as it is beyond that.  Its innovative flashing images and moveable scaffold turn this postage stamp-sized stage into a hundred locales in a flash and takes you on a rock ‘n’ roll ride which will live in our memories and yours for some time to come.

Tonight and Saturday at 8:00pm are your final chances to experience our high-energy punk rock musical hit Green Day’s American Idiot.

We store, save, step over and walk around stuff.  We come from the “waste not, want not” school of theatre.  Circular bigger-than-life hairspray cans from Beehive became castles for Monty Python’s Spamalot and, saved, now become an ogre’s lair and a princess’s tower for Shrek The Musical JR.

I sit in wonder and watch the company of Saturday School of the Arts thespians rehearse Shrek.  These are children — there is no getting around that — but their devotion and energy is phenomenal and awe-inspiring.

On a similar note, Clarksville Academy educator Amanda Pitt brought students Madeline O’Connor, Annie Bennett, Day Weaver, Ellie Rocconi and Cassidy Stevenson to paint the sets for Shrek.  These part-time interns, stylishly dressed and paint-spattered, seemed to turn work into play while offering helping hands toward bringing Shrek to life.

Shrek The Musical JR. opens next Friday, May 20, at 6:00pm.  Performances continue May 21, 24, 25, 28, 31, June 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 at 6:00pm; May 21, 28, June 4 and 11 at 2:00pm; and May 26 at 7:00pm.  All tickets are $15.

On Saturday, May 28 and June 11, at 12:30pm, we offer “Lunch with Shrek,” a package including lunch at Edward’s (hot dogs, Shrek’s Mac & Cheese, fresh fruit, beverage and Shrek’s “Dirt Cups” for dessert), photos with Shrek and Fiona, fairytale crafts, and the 2:00pm performance. Tickets are $40, and all children must be accompanied by a paying adult.

Today is the reservation deadline for our annual spring fundraiser, “Happenin’ at the Hollemans,” on Monday, May 23, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm, featuring the unveiling of our 34th season with food by Fire & Ice Catering (Smoked Brisket Sliders with Cole Slaw Shooters, Corn Dogs with Assorted Mustards, Fresh Fruit & Cheese Display, Candy Bar, Mini Peach Pies, Smoked Salmon Latkes with Creme Fraiche, Greek Pasta Salad and more), mint juleps by MB Roland Distillery, wine by Beachaven Winery, beer by Budweiser of Clarksville and AJAX Distributing, and entertainment by Stuart Bonnington & Curious Bluegrass.  Tickets are $50 and can be reserved at or (931) 645-7699.

See you at the theatre!
