A Valentine’s MY WAY, LES MISERABLES Auditions

by RoxyRegionalTheatre on February 14, 2014

With Frank Sinatra and Fred Landiss, how can you go wrong?

Landiss brought his coterie of friends and guests here last Friday to see My Way: A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra. Location is everything. They walked a few doors down from F&M Bank’s Franklin Room to make up a large part of the full house which greeted our first performance of Sinatra favorites, all so beautifully and expertly rendered by four consummate professionals — Michael Spaziani, Allie McCaw, Ryan Bowie and Morgan Billings.

Les Miserables, a massive retelling of the Victor Hugo classic with music and lyrics by Alain Boublil and Claude Michel-Schonberg, is such a vast undertaking, almost an opera in its magnitude and requiring a huge cast.

To help support the sixteen professionals, we are opening up roles in the ensemble to the community. Auditions are set for 5:00pm next Monday, February 17, at the Roxy Regional Theatre (100 Franklin Street). Those interested in auditioning for the children’s roles should prepare at least 16 bars of a song performed by Young Cosette, Young Eponine or Gavroche. For adult ensemble roles, interested auditionees should prepare at least 16 bars of a song of their choice from the production. Music will be provided. Rehearsals are tentatively scheduled from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, beginning March 17, with evening and weekend performances running March 28 through May 10.

I fondly remember the Front Street Theatre — Memphis’ professional theatre, like us, housed in an old abandoned cinema — opening its ranks to include community members from time to time. I was one of the fortunate few who had the opportunity to work with professionals, getting to be on the inside of what I had only seen from the outside.

This experience offered me the same chance as it will for those who participate in Les Miserables, to move that one step further in their chosen careers. For some it will simply be a fond walk down memory lane, a chance to tread the boards once again; and for others, like it was for me, the beginnings of a career in the theatre.

Tonight, February 14, treat your valentine to an unforgettable evening of cocktails, sumptuous hors d’oeuvres and the iconic music of Ol’ Blue Eyes. Martinis will be flowing at 7pm this evening, courtesy of Elite Wine & Spirits, complemented by a menu created especially for this event by Fire & Ice Catering: Civiche Shooters (Shrimp and Calamari), California Crab Cakes, Italian Antipasto, Bangkok Lettuce Wraps, and Mocha Cake with Espresso Cream Frosting.

My Way: A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra — featuring over four dozen hits including “Strangers in the Night,” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” “The Lady Is A Tramp,” “New York, New York” and, of course, the perennial favorite “My Way” — takes the stage at 8pm.

Tickets to “Martinis with Frank” are $50 per person and may be reserved by calling (931) 645-7699 or visiting the Roxy between 9:00am and 2:00pm.

See you at the theatre!
